Something cheap friends can sleep on when they stay over in college?

I live in an apartment off campus at college. I have a fairly large, wood floored room, full size bed, and not a lot of money. Also I am moving out the end of this semester (but I can’t go thru the rest of the semester without something)

I’ve considered futons but haven’t been able to find what I want on Craigslist, I’m afraid one will be too big for the space I have. Or too crappy and junky. I don’t want to spend more than 100$ on a futon. Are there any other options for a bed that I can use? Like a chair that will fold down to a bed but isn’t huge but isn’t too small to the point where they will roll off ?

I’m just looking for some ideas.

What’s wrong with the floor? Tell them to bring a sleeping bag or something to lay on. If your only going to be there for another semester than why would you want to go through the hassle of finding a couch, bringing it in, and than taking it out again. Just get a cheep blow up mattress. They even make ones that inflate to the size of a regular bed.

Here’s an example:

  3. An inflatable mattress would be the best. Blow it up when people visit, then just put it back in it’s box when they leave.

  4. I second that inflatable mattress suggestion — they are really comfortable and have become very cheap.

Another thing you can do is get 30" square by 4 inch to 6 inch thick slabs of foam rubber and make nice looking fabric covers for them. Fabric stores like Joanns sell the foam as do many Army surplus stores. You can also buy a cot-sized foam mattress and cut it with scissors or a serrated knife into thirds. You can stack 3 or 4 of these cushions to make seating or spread them out on the floor to sleep on. I made a couple of sets years ago for that use and also used them in the back of my minivan on camping trips, for seating and to sleep. They were great around my apartment because we could arrange them however we wanted them, like putting them under and behind us when sitting on the floor leaning against the couch watching TV.

The air mattress works well. They are relatively cheap. Check out those at Walmart or sports stores. Some even come with a pump to inflate them.
